    Description

Photograph measures approx. 5 x 7 inches mounted at corners on cardboard backing measuring 5 5/8" x 11". At the left edge of the photo is Roamer -Schutting(er): jockey Andy Schuttinger.
An small bay Roamer was bred at Runnymede Farm by the Clay Brothers and had a number of major wins between 1913 1nd 1918. Roamer was named American Horse of the Year in 1914 and was American Champion Older Male Horse in 1915 & 1916. Bloodhorse  named Roamer #99 among the top 100 US racehorses of the 20th Century. The Roamer Handicap is named for him at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Photograph came with a number of horse racing items that belonged to Walter S. Vosburgh, an original member of The Jockey Club, turf historian ( author of American Racing, 1866-1921 ), official handicapper for various racing associations, including New York race tracks from 1894-1934 and for whom the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park are named.
The last owner of the items placed several photos on cardboard, apparently in the 1980s or 90s to make a grouping of famous horses; often with neatly inked descriptions.
    Thank you.
